Mariner

Key features

  • All stations and routes would be elevated.
  • Community Transit serves this area with local buses and the Swift Green Line.
  • The Mariner Park-and-Ride lot is west of I-5 and south of 128th St SW.
  • Approximately 550 new parking spaces are being studied at this station, but final design and construction of parking is deferred.
  • No preferred alternative was identified for this segment.

The MAR-1 route alternative starts along the westside of I-5 before a wide left turn takes the elevated route along the southside of 128th Southwest. The MAR-2 route alternative connects to Station MAR D south of 128th Street Southwest then runs along the northside of 128th Street Southwest.

Key landmarks are Windstone Apartments (HUD-Assisted), Pellegrini Orthodontics, Safeway, and the Future mariner Community Campus. The Swift Bus Rapid transit route runs along 128th Street SW. Some small wetlands areas are nearby but not impacted by either route.

Alternatives

Alternative MAR-1B consists of Alignment MAR-1 and Station MAR-B.

Alignment: MAR-1 would run elevated on the west side of I-5 and turn west near 128th St SW, continuing elevated along the south side of 128th St SW before going briefly to at-grade east of Gibson Road and returning to elevated along the southwest side of Airport Road. The height of the guideway would range between at-grade and approximately 70 feet high.

Station: Station MAR-B would be an elevated station in the vicinity of 8th Ave W. The station canopy would be approximately 80 feet above the ground and would require an intermediate landing, sometimes called a mezzanine, below the platforms. Parking for Station MAR-B would be located in two parking structures, one adjacent to the station platform at the corner of 128th St SW and 8th Ave W and another along 4th Ave W, across from the existing Mariner Park-and-Ride.

Alternative MAR-2D consists of Alignment MAR-2 and Station MAR-D.

Alignment: MAR-2 would run elevated roughly parallel to 4th Ave W. The guideway would turn west and cross over 128th St SW near 8th Ave W where it would transition briefly to an at-grade profile before returning to elevated along the northeast side of Airport Road. The height of the guideway would range between at-grade and approximately 55 feet high.

Station: Station MAR-D would be an elevated station in the vicinity of Mariner Park-and-Ride. The station canopy would be approximately 65 feet above the ground. Parking for Station MAR-D would be located in a parking structure at the existing Mariner Park-and-Ride.

Each station alternative has a design option for a surface parking lot instead of a parking structure. For Station MAR-B, the surface parking design option would be located at the corner of 4th Ave W and 132nd St SW across from the existing Mariner Park-and-Ride. For Station MAR-D, the surface parking design option would be located in two lots: one at the corner of 4th Ave W and 132nd St SW across from the existing Mariner Park-and-Ride and another on the south side of 132nd St SW. The parking design options for Stations MAR-B and MAR-D are shown in the maps below.

  • Explore moving the turnback from the Mariner segment to Ash Way segment. This option would terminate the 2 Line at Ash Way instead of Mariner. This would keep the tracks within existing right-of-way with fewer private properties affected.
  • Explore moving the I-5 crossover farther from the residential area to reduce noise impacts.

Alternatives summary table

This table summarizes some of the key findings in the Draft EIS Executive Summary.  To review the detailed summary of findings, visit Section 4.3.2.4 and Table 4-31 of the Draft EIS.

Notes:
a) Numbers or descriptions presented in this table are for permanent or long-term impacts, except where a construction impact is noted. Each alignment alternative is compatible with all alignment alternatives in the adjacent segments. The ranges of displacements reflect the various connections to the adjacent segments.
b) Opinions of probable cost are in 2025 dollars, are for comparative purposes only, and do not represent the project budget. The opinion of probable cost for the Mariner alternatives does not include cost for parking.

Please note that the information contained in the table is repeated in an outlined list below. There is no difference from the content shared in the table. It is provided in two different formats so the information is accessible to everyone.
